Women's Health

Stephanie Hoppy, APRN in the hallway at Seaside Family Wellness

Women's health at Seaside Family Wellness covers well woman exams, contraception counseling, menstrual and perimenopausal symptoms, menopause support, breast and cervical cancer screening discussion, thyroid and hormone evaluation, bone health, and the preventive care that changes by decade. Both providers are women and board certified family nurse practitioners, so the same person can handle a well woman visit, a thyroid question, and a blood pressure recheck in one relationship rather than three. Seaside Family Wellness is at 1657 SE Port St Lucie Blvd, Port St. Lucie, open Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Call (772) 678-0011.

What a well woman visit covers

A well woman visit is preventive care organized around the health issues that are specific to or more common in women.

  • History and risk review. Menstrual history, pregnancy history, contraception, sexual health, family history of breast, ovarian, uterine, and colon cancer, and family history of osteoporosis and heart disease.
  • Vital signs and physical exam.
  • Breast health discussion. Screening timing based on your age and risk, what to do about a finding, and what breast awareness actually means in practice.
  • Cervical cancer screening discussion. Timing and interval depend on your age and screening history. Your provider will tell you where you fall.
  • Screening labs where indicated. Thyroid, iron and anemia studies, lipids, glucose and A1C, and vitamin levels are commonly considered.
  • Mental health check in. Mood, anxiety, sleep, and stress are part of the visit, not an afterthought.
  • Immunization review.

Care across the decades

Twenties and thirties. Contraception and family planning, menstrual problems, sexually transmitted infection screening, thyroid symptoms, anemia, and building a baseline set of numbers you will be compared against for the rest of your life.

Forties. Perimenopause frequently begins here and is frequently mistaken for stress or depression. Cycles change, sleep degrades, mood shifts. This is also when breast and colorectal screening conversations begin in earnest, and when blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose trends start to matter more.

Fifties and beyond. Menopause symptoms and whether treatment is appropriate, bone density and fracture risk, cardiovascular risk, which rises meaningfully after menopause, thyroid function, and continued cancer screening.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the United States, and its warning signs are more often atypical in women than the classic crushing chest pain. Fatigue, shortness of breath, nausea, back or jaw pain, and a general sense of something being wrong are all worth taking seriously.

Menstrual and perimenopausal symptoms

Symptoms worth bringing in rather than absorbing:

  • Periods that have become much heavier, much longer, or are soaking through protection
  • Bleeding between periods, after intercourse, or after menopause
  • Cycles that have become unpredictable in a new way
  • Severe cramping that interferes with work or daily life
  • Hot flashes and night sweats disrupting sleep
  • New or worsening mood changes tied to your cycle
  • Vaginal dryness, irritation, or pain with intercourse

Any bleeding after menopause should be evaluated. Not because it is usually serious, but because it sometimes is, and that is exactly the category of symptom that should never be assumed benign at home.

For hormone evaluation specifically, see Hormone Replacement Therapy and Thyroid Balance.

Contraception counseling

Contraception choice is a fit problem, not a ranking problem. The most effective method in a study is not the most effective method for you if it does not fit your life, your health history, or your plans.

Your provider will walk through the available categories, how they work, effectiveness in real use rather than perfect use, side effect profiles, how they interact with any conditions you have, and what happens when you want to stop. Some options are provided or prescribed in the office and others involve referral. Ask directly and you will get a direct answer about what is available here.

Bone health

Bone loss is silent until a fracture. Risk rises after menopause, and rises further with a family history of osteoporosis, low body weight, smoking, certain medications including long term steroids, and low calcium or vitamin D intake.

Screening timing is individual. Your provider will discuss when bone density testing makes sense for you and what the practical prevention steps are: weight bearing activity, resistance training, adequate protein, calcium and vitamin D, and fall risk reduction.

When to see someone else

Seaside Family Wellness provides primary care. Prenatal care, delivery, gynecologic surgery, infertility treatment, and complex gynecologic conditions are managed by obstetrics and gynecology. Your provider will refer you when that is the right move and will continue to manage the rest of your health alongside that specialist.

Payment

Seaside Family Wellness participates with some insurance plans, but not all. Participating plans change frequently, so call (772) 678-0011 before your visit to confirm whether we currently participate with your specific plan. Self-pay options are available, and labs and diagnostics can sometimes be billed through your insurance when medically appropriate.

Common questions

Are both providers female?

Yes. Amy Weber, APRN and Stephanie Hoppy, APRN are both board certified family nurse practitioners. See Providers.

Do I still need a primary care provider if I see a gynecologist?

Yes. A gynecologist manages reproductive health. Primary care manages blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, thyroid, mental health, immunizations, and everything else.

Can I bring up more than one concern?

Yes. Mention them when you book so enough time is set aside.
